Coelogyne cristata : Orchid Species InformationGenus name : Coelogyne
Species : cristata
This is an easy to grow and stunning species that is found
growing as an epiphyte in the Himalayas. It is a cool growing
species that tolerates temperatures down to about 45f (C. 8c).
The plant can be pot-grown or mounted, my preference is to
mount the plant and that helps to show of the flowers all the
better. The plant likes to be misted several times per day and
given a good soak daily during the growing season, this should
only be done if the plants roots have dried out if grown in a
pot. Fertiliser is given weekly during the growing season.

In the winter months, water is reduced to daily mistings, just
enough to prevent the pseudobulbs from shrivelling excessively.
Some shrivelling will take place but is not harmful and they will
plump up again when watering resumes after flowering. A drop in
temperature is beneficial for initiating the flowers; plants
grown overly warm during the cooler months have a tendency to not
flower in my experience.
Flowering takes place from winter to spring, the pendulous
spike appears from the base of the previous seasons mature
pseudobulb. It carries up to eight 4" (10 cm) crystalline
white flowers with a yellow crest, which is scented.
