Ascocentrum miniatum : Orchid Species InformationGenus name : Ascocentrum
Species : miniatum
A small compact Vanda-like species, which is found in Thailand, Malaysia and the Himalayas. This species is often used to breed with Vanda.
It requires intermediate temperatures with high humidity and plenty of air movement. It can withstand conditions a bit drier than other Ascocentrum species, but has a preference to not drying out for too long.
If moss is used during the summer months to assist with water, it is very important to remove it before the cooler months come, as it will suffer from stem rot and quickly die. Mist regularly during the winter, ensuring the plants are dry before nightfall.
This species loves to have its long roots dangling in the air and definitely resents having them contained. It benefits from having it’s roots soaked for several minutes regularly during the growing season as well as several mistings per day.
The flowering season is from early to late spring. A well-grown plant carries several 6” inflorescences with up thirty ½” flowers of bright orange-red.
Specific Epithet : Red coloured
