Encyclia cochleatum : Orchid Species InformationGenus name : Encyclia
Species : cochleatum
This medium sized Encyclia is found from Florida down to South America and produces non-resupinate flowers, flowers which do not twist to present the lip downwards. The lip is held at the top of the flower so therefore appears to be upside down. It is a cool to intermediate growing species and needs high humidity and good air movement. It grows well on mounts and just as well in pots. It should be kept moist through the winter months. The erect inflorescence appears in spring and can be few or many flowered. The 2” flowers open in two’s and three’s in succession, which means this plant, can be in flower for many months. The lip is cockle shell-like and normally mauve through to purple, but some clones are in cultivation which is near black. The green sepals and petals are sometimes lightly spotted with the lip colour, and tend to trail below, like octopus legs.
Specific Epithet : From the Greek, meaning to twist or spiral. Commonly known as the cockle shell orchid.
