Dendrobium amethystoglossum : Orchid Species Information
Genus name : Dendrobium
Species : amethystoglossum
A large growing species from the Philippines. It is normally a lithophyte found growing on mossy limestone cliffs. The canes reach a length of about 18” and several inflorescences are produced on leafless and leafy canes. Old canes can continue to produce flower spike in future years, so it is important not to remove old canes before they are hollow and dead.
The inflorescence is pendant to around 8” and carries up to forty 1” flowers which are white with a stunning amethyst lip. They need plenty water and fertiliser during the growing season to enable them to grow their tall canes. A winter dry rest is required during the colder winter months. This plant is best suited to pot culture.
