Cymbidium Orchid Genus

Subtribe : Cymbidiinae
Meaning : Boat orchid. Referring to the boat shaped lip.

Probably one of the most popular orchid genera grown, but sadly mainly for the hybrids. The species are not so common now in cultivation and are becoming much sought after. The large colourful flowers of the hybrids are prized for corsage and table decoration. After many years of neglect, Cymbidium species are enjoying a revival in cultivation. They range from the Himalayas through China, the Philippine Islands and down to Australasia. They vary in climate from cool – nearly cold – to intermediate and warm. Normally the cool growers require a very cool period to initiate flowering. I normally leave these plants in the garden until the first frosts arrive then move them back into the greenhouse. Care being taken not to let the frost actually get onto the plants. Intermediate and warm growing plants need higher temperatures during the winter with no rest. They are found as epiphytes, lithophytes and terrestrials.
