Calanthe Orchid GenusSubtribe : Blettinae
Meaning : Beautiful flower.
With 200 plus species, this is a large genus of terrestrial orchids. There are two basic groups within this genus, deciduous and non-deciduous. While it is a widespread genus throughout the tropical regions, it is to be more commonly found in Asia. They range from cold growing through to hot. The two types of Calanthe require different culture. The deciduous group require water and fertiliser through the spring and summer months, with a reduction to nil for the colder winter months when the mature bulbs will drop their leaves, while the evergreen species, although requiring less water, need some during the winter months.
It has been noted that the groups won’t hybridise with each other and therefore may be two different genera.
