Laelia Orchid GenusSubtribe : Laeliinae
Meaning : Named for one of the vestal virgins.
This is a large genus which has been divided into several sections. They are closely related to Cattleya with which they are often hybridised. They are found across South America, and are epiphytes, lithophytes and terrestrial. While most enjoy full light, they benefit from partial shade and high humidity. A lot of Laelia are cool growing plants, but the majority prefer temperatures in the intermediate to warm house. Plenty of water and fertiliser is the norm during the growing season, with less during the winter months. Laelia flower at any time of the year depending on the species, but with a tendency towards spring with the majority.
