Epidendrum Orchid GenusSubtribe : Laeliinae
Meaning : Greek, epi (upon) and dendron (tree) referring to the epiphytic nature of the plants.
This is a very large genus from which Encyclia were separated a long time ago. In fact inter-generic hybrids which contain Encyclia still refer to Epidendrum in accordance with international nomenclature.
They are both epiphytic and terrestrial and sometimes lithophytes. Usually, but not always, the pseudobulbs are upright elongated and assume a reed-type growth. Normally the inflorescence, which may be few or many flowered, appears at the apex of the growth. Plenty of water and humidity is required during the growing period, and some moisture at the roots through the winter. They are usually cool to intermediate growers, with some requiring warm house conditions. Good air movement is a must as with all high humidity loving plants.
