Dendrobium Orchid GenusSubtribe : Dendrobiinae
Meaning : Tree of life. From Dendros meaning tree, and Bios meaning life.
This is the second largest genus of orchids after Bulbophylum and possibly the most common grown species. There are probably in excess of 1,200 species within the genus, and they are very diverse in both habit and habitat. They are usually epiphytes, but sometimes lithophytes. Temperature ranges from cool through to warm house. Many species require a cool dry winter rest to initiate flowering. While some are deciduous others are evergreen. They are found throughout Asia and down into Australasia. The hybrids are widely grown in Asia for the cut-flower trade and shipped world-wide.
