Plants of the MonthDendrobium heterocarpumWhether Dendrobium heterocarpum is flowering out of synch for some reason, or just plain flowering for a second time, Im not really sure. I for one have never seen it flower at this time of year, except as a recently imported plant. The last time they flowered was around April, so it came as a pleasant surprise to find the vast majority of plants producing flower buds again. The buff to straw-yellow flowers are produced the length of the leafless canes, normally from mid-winter onwards, in groups of two to four. They are heavily scented and very long lasting. Dendrobium heterocarpum is a cool growing plant which can be found growing in many of the Himalayan countries down to the Philippines. It is a large plant and the canes vary in size from 9" (23cm.) long on the smaller flowering-sized plants to nearly 36" (90cm) on larger plants. A large growing plant with flowers the length of the canes are not only a delight to the eye, but also to nose. On walking into the greenhouse when this species is in flower, there is no missing the perfume. I think, in the Dendrobium species, it is only matched by D. draconis. It requires plenty of water during the growing season, and full, shaded sun, light. Water and fertiliser should be decreased with the onset of winter until it is completely stopped by winter time. After flowering in the spring, water should be gradually increased after the new growths begin to produce new roots. As with most Dendrobiums of this type, if you water too soon, then plantlets will be formed at the expense of flowers. Purchases of this plant, and all other plants on our site can now be made by credit and most debit cards through the secure encrypted online shop.
