Our Orchids
We carry a good selection of species
mainly, but always in limited numbers. Plants
are imported from Thailand and the
Philippines from select nurseries. We are
also growing on a number of seedling species
from South America. Subscribe to our
Newsletter to be sure you hear when these are
ready. There are also some interesting articles at the bottom
of this page which may be of interest.
We do not split plants into smaller clumps
when they arrive, but pot them as they are
received into pure sphagnum. We find that the
plants settle and acclimatise much quicker in
Sphagnum moss, and in fact, for many years
this is how I have chosen to grow my plants.
I no longer use bark chips as a potting
medium. The seedlings especially, do
exceptionally well in this.

Vanda Coerulea |
I am currently negotiating to purchase New Zealand
Sphagnum moss wholesale so that I can offer this for
sale to growers who normally use this potting medium
for their plants, and to those who wish to experiment
with growing orchids in it.
New Zealand Sphagnum comes from renewable sources,
and in my opinion is not ecologically harmful. The
moss is farmed and managed with
consideration for the natural bogs.
We currently have Dendrobium, Doritis
pulcherima varieties, Vanda and some
Phalaenopsis hybrids to name but a few. The
plants will be offered on the Plants of the
Month page and also in the newsletters. If a
plant takes your fancy, then send an email,
or phone to reserve it.
We have chosen to offer some of the more
rare and uncommon species, along with the
common, in the hope that we can encourage
people to grow them and perhaps dispel the
myths about how difficult they are. We are
always on hand to assist with culture queries
for those who arent sure about how to
treat a particular species, but rest assured,
if we have never grown it and flowered it
successfully ourselves over the last 26
years, we will say so. Our cultural tips are
based on how we grow them successfully, and
not how others do it. It must be remembered
though, that culture has to be modified to
suit the individual person and plant, like
any other nursery we cannot guarantee that if
you do it our way you will be successful, but there is no reason why, with a bit of patience, and especially a feel for your plant, you cant modify the culture to suit yourself. With observation and care, there should be few plants you cant grow and flower. | |
Dendrobium draconis | On occasion, the illustrations that accompany the Plants of the Month will be for sale by the artist. This is the same artist, Stuart Hunter, who made our logo of Psychopsis (Oncidium) krameriana. Again, keep an eye on the Newsletter for details, or send an email and ask. My grateful thanks also go to Greg Allikas for his kind permission to use his photographs of Vanda sanderiana and V. denisoniana Mary Motes FCC/AOS. Please visit his Website and view his stunning photographs.
