One of the main problems is that most taxonomy was done with original, preserved herbarium species, in some cases fresh material cannot be found to confirm the work already done. The material has deteriorated to certain extents and new specimens are needed. As with Phalaenopsis tetraspis and speciosa, no plants are left in the natural habitat to confirm separation ofthe species. It's very important to note that mateial must be wild collected and not taken from plants which are in cultivation.
We are now left with the very frustrating case of using genetics to determine species and either leave them or change them. It's a time consuming job. Chromosom counting appears to be one of the jobs that people don't want to do, I've looked at it and tried it and it's so difficult, not to mention tedious, I've decided it would never be for me even if I was capable of preparing the material.
It's probably better to leave plants labeled as they are and change the labels when a definite answer is announced. The names and changes are listed with the RHS, but they are very slow at adoption.
