I found the orchid you mentioned Roy, thought the others might share their thoughts on it.
Looks just like a Phal doesn't it?
This is apparently the breeding, maybe there is a mistake with the one I have.
Seed Parent: Phalaenopsis Doris
Pollen Parent: Ascocentrum miniatum
Genus: Asconopsis
Hybrid Epithet: Irene Dobkin
Binomial name
Asconopsis Irene Dobkin

Thornton 1968

Thats the one in question MO. This is the only one that is known that I can find. From what I told, this cross was originated by Hausermanns in the USA. "Elmhurst" was the only plant m/cloned and sold. No-one is quite sure what happened to the other plants.
Another sourse says that he saw a bench full of these plants in Thailand, one side small m/clones of the above and the other side, all larger plants of apparent seedlings as the they all varied greatly in plant, color, flowers etc. Again, doesn't know what happened to them.
The variation in the seedlings would explain why yours is so different and that your plant originated from Thailand. Its totally possible that one one plant, "Elmhurst" could take the greater Phal side in flower but its an extreme rarity and probably they were lucky to have it.
From all the comments received, getting an Irene Dobkin to grow and flower, regardless of the clone, is one of lifes great achievements. |

I'd be happy to wait a long time for a spike like that, I think it's beautiful. _________________ Debbie

I guess it looks pretty good but maybe it will not flower again, especially as I was thinking of repotting it. They have a habit of pushing themselves out of the pot hence the many roots showing.

I hope it does flower again Mo, but if you should lose patience with it I might just be able to rearrange things enough to fit it in... _________________ Debbie

It wasn't a guess - you weren't in front of me, there was only one other place you could be! _________________ Debbie

Hi, guess what? The asconopsis has another flower spike!
I had better threaten the other orchid (laelia albida) that hasn't flowered which I had at the same time.

Well done Mo. I'm looking forward to seeing how the flowers compare with the first flowering. _________________ Debbie

Yes it will be interesting to see, I should have measured it! A few too many flowers to count.
It does take quite a while to grow so maybe there will be lots again.
